The first team building exercise came from Lindsay’s list. The group decided to choose an activity that improves trust and reliability within the group. Therefore, we each broke up into two sets of partners. Partnered together were Vena and Lindsay, and Ralph and Tiffany. We started out by leaning against each other’s backs. Then slowly we would each inch our feet further and further out, until we were completely reliant on each other. If one of us did something wrong then both of us would fall down. This really built up trust within our group because, even though we barely knew each other we had to trust that the other person would not let you fall. Our activity was extremely successful. No one got hurt! And
we all had fun doing it!
The next exercise we did involved thinking through a survival scenario that Ralph had on his list. At the start of the survival scenario team building exercise, each of us came up with our own individual item ranking then we compared it to other members of the team. After we saw that our rankings were different from each other’s, we started to discuss as a group why each of us thought that one item was more important than the other and asked if anyone disagreed and If so why. After twenty minutes of discussion, we came to an agreement about the item’s ranking’s for the group. We compared it with the U.S. army’s list of items that were ranked in order of importance as well. It turns out that most of our ranking’s are the same or very similar while a few of the items are ranked differently. From this exercise we learned that cooperation and communication are important in teamwork.
After Ralph’s team building exercise we chose one from Vena’s list called “Blind Polygon.” We chose to do this exercise because it seemed more fun than the “Me Too” game and the “Encouragement” game. We had a lot of fun trying to make shapes. It was very hard with only three people so we were only able to make lines and ovals. It would be more suitable for a bigger group of six or more. It was interesting that each person got to play the role of facilitator and participant. It gave all of us a laugh trying to do what we thought was impossible. A lot of the time we just scattered, thinking we were making shapes when we weren’t really making shapes at all. All in all, we worked together and did the best that we could.
The very last exercise we did came from Tiffany’s list called “Catch The Cat.” We stood in a
circle and started tossing one stuffed animal, randomly, from person to person. The name of the game is “Catch the Cat,” because the idea is that you would use stuffed animals that were cats, but any stuffed animals would do. As time went on, we would periodically add a stuffed animal to the mix. Eventually the group got up to 4 stuffed animals, all varying in size. It was a really fun and random game, and we kept trying to start over each time a stuffed animal got dropped. It was a successful exercise, because each group member had fun, and we were all able to let loose and get out of our comfort zone. If the group was bigger, we could have gotten more stuffed animals to throw around without dropping them, but we think we did pretty well with it just being the four of us.
After we did our team building exercises, we discussed and went over Belbin’s Team Role Theory. We realized that we each played a different role in the group, and were able to identify that role. Lindsay identified with the plant role, Vena identified with the monitor-evaluator role, Ralph identified with the implementer role, and Tiffany identified with the coordinator role. With a small group, it’s hard to cover all the roles, but if we each contribute a little bit and are willing to switch roles than we will work well together and be a success. If we have a problem, we all know that we can talk to each other in a calm and rational manner and work it out.
